A Sensory-Friendlier Halloween, Planned Together

Halloween tomorrow. For many neurodivergent learners, it’s a paradox holiday: exciting in theory, overwhelming in practice — costumes that itch, houses that jump-scare, routes that run long, and social scripts nobody taught them.
A plan, made with your child today, changes the whole night:

  • Costume reality check — try it on at home, tags and textures included. A modified or simple costume their body tolerates beats a perfect costume abandoned by 6:30.
  • Preview the route and the rules — how many houses, roughly how long, what “thank you or trick-or-treat — your choice, or just holding the bucket” looks like. Rehearsal is kindness.
  • Agree on the exit — a word or signal that means “I’m done,” no questions asked, and a cozy home base (candy sorting, a favorite movie) waiting after.
  • Sensory kit in a pocket — earbuds or ear defenders, a familiar snack, a small fidget.
  • Redfine success — three happy houses and home content is a successful Halloween.
However your family does tomorrow, a learner whose limits are planned for will remember being respected — and that memory outlasts candy.
